Flesh & Steel ft. Boy Harsher

By

Truly a night not to miss, the second day of Flesh & Steel offers up the international synth stars, Boy Harsher, as headliners. The Belgian new beat progenitors, A Split-Second, also top the bill with UK’s 1980s synthpop wonders, Parade Ground. Soft Crash, the collaborative project by Phase Fatale and Pablo Bozzi, will deliver their concoction of Italo Body Music, while Ms. Boan will perform from her vast catalog of minimal synth songs. Additionally, the synthpunk stylings of NGHTCRWLR are a spectacle to see. With DJ sets by Kontravoid and Andi plus a performance by 80s Baby (plus more to be announced soon).

Quo Vadis: Aaron Dilloway, Pharmakon, Hiro Kone

By

Aaron Dilloway

An inspiration to the experimental music community at large, Aaron Dilloway will be bringing his captivating live performance to the Knockdown Center for the very first time. The Oberlin-based artist has been a staple of the underground for decades, with an extensive discography which includes the critically acclaimed Modern Jester (Hanson Records) and The Gag File (Dais Records) as well as recent collaborative efforts with John Wiese, Robert Turman, C. Lavender, Lucretia Dalt, and Victoria Shen. The use of 8-track cassette loops has helped him forge a sound that is hypnotic, bizarre, and instantly recognizable as his own. Aaron has consistently given boundary-pushing sets to audiences worldwide throughout his career, and Quo Vadis is more than proud to bring him to our family here in New York.

Pharmakon

There is no stronger contribution to the contemporary body of industrial music than Pharmakon. Margaret Chardiet has become widely known for displaying a fierce intensity that never fails to remain intimate. Baring it all in front of her audiences, she invites you to traverse the horrors of existence with an overwhelming stage presence which often carries onto the floor itself. Using volume, physicality, and the sheer power of the human voice, she expands on the extremities of sound in a way that’s entirely unmatched. We are honored to present the project’s first live performance since the winter of 2019.

Hiro Kone

Returning to the Knockdown Center is our beloved resident Hiro Kone. Always the dynamic performer, Nicky Mao continues to share with Quo Vadis her signature blend of experimental electronics. Last year’s set at the NYFA showcase was as sublime as it was mind bending, and we are so excited to see what she has in store for us this time around. Her use of synthesizers defies all limitations and categorizations, creating a truly unique headspace that she guides us through with unexpected turns lurking around each and every corner.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON MONKEYPOX:

We are keeping close tabs on the ongoing outbreak and are working with the city’s health department to prioritize the safety of the community. If at any point we feel it is unsafe to continue with the event, updates will be issued. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated prior to attending. (If possible, given the shortage.)

Horse Meat Disco is purely for dancing. Please be mindful of others’ boundaries with their bodies and minimize skin-to-skin contact to lower the risk of transmission. Dancing with clothing on and only with trusted friends are good ways to reduce risk.

If you are displaying any symptoms of monkeypox, we emphasize that you sit this one out and stay at home. There will be more Horse Meat Discos, but we must keep our community safe.

The symptoms of monkeypox include the tell-tale lesions and rash, as well as flu-like symptoms: fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, sore throat, nasal congestion, and cough. It can spread through skin-to-skin contact, respiratory droplets, and touching infected objects.

More information can be found about monkeypox on the CDC website and in this video by Dr. Demetre Daskalakis: 5 Things Sexually Active People Need to Know About Monkeypox.

23,000 new first-dose appointments will go online on the City’s vaccine portal beginning Thursday, August 4th at 6pm.

Appointments will be made available on the City’s vaccine portal: vax4nyc.nyc.gov/monkeypox and by calling 877-VAX-4NYC (877-829-4692)

We hope to be able to offer more resources to the community as vaccines become more readily available and will update accordingly.
