Knock Knock #4

Next weekend, Ben Klock’s infamous Photon comes to Knockdown Center. Prior to the pandemic, the traveling party was the cornerstone of Klock’s busy calendar with editions in São Paulo, Dublin, Amsterdam, NY and more. Each edition was a lovingly-developed artistic statement from a DJ whose reputation was so secure he could have settled for a life of breezy jet setting without the hassle. Since the reopening, however, Photon has remained dormant. Until now. Knockdown Center is proud to host Klock’s first edition since 2019. It’s a fresh reworking of the concept with a raft of KDC favorites.

Klock is famously one of Berghain’s longest running residents. He is, perhaps more than anyone else, responsible for the spread of the now-ubiquitous Berghain techno sound. As a de facto cultural ambassador and standard-setter, his long-form sets and alchemical mixture of severe, looming power with nimble grooves helped convert a generation to techno. Photon began as a collaboration between Klock and Berghain lighting designer Lars Murasch. After many years of working together in the club, a shared interest in presenting a more immersive concept emerged. Murasch’s lighting would take center stage, while Klock would invite a specially curated lineup reflecting the cutting edge of techno.

For their return, they’re starting with a clean slate: Murasch will focus only on white lighting, exploring every facet of it from cold, bright white to warmer textures. A custom installation will be set up in the venue, allowing for an unprecedented intricacy, delicacy and power. Additionally, they’re bringing on visual artist Xaver Hirsch to collaborate. The lineup will be familiar to KDC regulars. Alongside Klock himself, FJAAKStef MendesidisVolvox and Juana have all logged serious hours in the building, both upstairs at Knockdown Center and downstairs at BASEMENT. This is an all-killer, no-filler crew who know exactly how to set a room off in true style.

Photon represents something very special: in a landscape rife with opportunities to dilute, Klock has chosen to put his money where his mouth is. The party is a feast for the senses and is curated without compromise. Klock invites a new generation of talent to step up and showcases them in a way few artists get to experience. We’re glad he’s back and honored he’s bringing Photon here.
